Elyse Cusack - SEC Defensive Player of the Week... again!

University of Florida sophomore libero/defensive specialist Elyse Cusack was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the first player in league history to win the award in back-to-back weeks.

The announcement marks Cusack’s fifth-career SEC Defensive Player of the Week selection, which also stands as the most in conference history. The award began in 2003.

Cusack earned the nod after averaging 6.14 digs per game in a pair of Florida wins over the weekend, leading the sixth-ranked Gators (13-0, 6-0 SEC) to road victories over Mississippi State and Alabama. She turned in a season-high 29 digs against the Crimson Tide on Sunday, including 13 in game three alone. The effort marked her 17th-straight match with a double-figure dig total, and her fifth of the season with 20 or more.

She also equaled her season high with seven assists in the Gators’ sweep of Mississippi State on Friday night.

On the year, Cusack is averaging 5.53 digs per game, which ranks second in the SEC, but her clip of 5.67 per game in conference matches ties for the league lead. She also leads the team in total aces and aces per game, with marks of 20 and 0.44, respectively.
