Marcie Hampton named to US National Team
May 31st, 2007
University of Florida senior outside hitter Marcie Hampton has been named to the 2007 U.S. National Team roster, head coach “Jenny” Lang Ping announced Thursday. The appointment is the second National Team selection for Hampton, as well as her seventh in the USA Volleyball program.
Having participated with USA Volleyball on a number of previous occasions, Hampton also played with the National Team in the summer of 2005. Her resume also includes stints with the U.S. A2 Team in 2006 and the Junior National Team in 2004-05 and 2001-02. She captained the U.S. Youth National Team to a gold medal at the 2002 NORCECA Continental Championships, while being named best attacker at the event.
Hampton, an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-South Region honorable mention and second-team All-Southeastern Conference pick in 2006, averaged 3.35 kills with a .222 attack percentage as a junior, while adding 3.35 digs and 0.59 blocks per game. She is the only player in school history to record 300 digs in each of her first three seasons, and the 2006 season saw her become the fastest player in UF history to break the 1,000-dig barrier. Hampton is also one of only three Florida players to amass at least 300 kills in each of their first three campaigns, and is one of just seven Gators in the school’s 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club.
Hampton’s appointment to the U.S. National team marks the seventh time since 2001 that a player has represented UF on the squad, and the fourth time in that stretch that a current Gator has done so. Since 2001, the Florida program has garnered 28 selections to USA Volleyball teams.
