Gators close Spring Season with 3-1 Loss
April 14th, 2007
The 16-time defending Southeastern Conference champion University of Florida volleyball team wrapped up competition in the spring season by falling to 2006 Big Ten champion Penn State, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University.
"The highlight today was a continuation of what we've seen in the spring - the play of Marcie Hampton," Florida coach Mary Wise said. "Marcie was a big-time point scorer for us today against a great team in Penn State. It was a perfect way for us to end the spring - against one of the best teams in the country. We know there are some areas we have to get better in. I was really proud of the way we played today considering we were without Amber and Kristina."
Despite playing without starters Amber McCray and Kristina Johnson, the Gators hung with the Nittany Lions. Penn State took the first game 30-27 before Florida won the second 31-29. PSU came back to take the third (30-25) and fourth (15-8) games to close out the match.
Though the team is finished with spring competition, Hampton and Angie McGinnis will both participate in the POWERADE Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships on April 22. The event will be broadcast on CSTV on May 6.
