Marcie Hampton to train with National Team

 

University of Florida rising senior Marcie Hampton was one of five collegiate athletes selected from across the nation to participate in the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team program in the summer of 2007.

 

Hampton's selection was based on an open tryout, which she attended in Colorado Springs on Feb. 23-25. Hampton will begin to train with the rest of the U.S. Women’s National Team beginning in May. Since 2001, a total of 10 current and former Gator players have been selected for 25 U.S. national team appointments, including the U.S. National Team, the U.S. Junior National Team, the U.S. A2 Team and the U.S. Junior National A2 Team.

 

Hampton, a 2006 AVCA All-South Region honorable mention pick as well as an All-SEC Second-Team selection for the second consecutive year, averaged 3.35 kills and 3.35 digs last season for the Gators. In 2006, Hampton became the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000-career digs and the only player in Florida history to record 300 digs in their first three seasons. Last year, Hampton became the seventh Gator to ever reach the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club and is one of only three players to amass at least 300 kills in their first three seasons.

 

Hampton has previously participated with USA Volleyball on numerous occasions, including playing with the National Team in the summer of 2005 as well as stints with the U.S. Women’s A2 Team in 2006 and the Junior National Team in 2004-05 and 2001-02. She captained the U.S. Youth National Team to a gold medal at the 2002 NORCECA Continental Championships while earning best attacker for the event.

 

The other four athletes selected include Stanford's Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza and Nebraska’s Tracy Stalls and Jordan Larson.

 

Among the competitions the players will be vying for roster spots for include the Pan American Cup held June 19-30 at Colima, Mexico, and the Pan American Games held July 14-19 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Other confirmed competitions on the 2007 schedule include the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix with weekend preliminary stops in Poland on Aug. 3-5, Russia on Aug. 10-12, Macau on Aug. 17-19. The finals of the Grand Prix are in Ningo, China on Aug. 22-26.
