Elyse Cusack - SEC Freshman of the Week
November 20th, 2006
After helping Florida claim sole possession of its 16th consecutive Southeastern Conference title with a pair of wins last weekend, libero Elyse Cusack was honored as the SEC's Freshman of the Week as announced Monday afternoon.
Cusack continued on her path toward breaking the SEC record for digs per game by averaging 5.86 per game in Florida victories at Tennessee and at home against Kentucky. Cusack had 19 against the Lady Vols on Friday and then came back to record 22 against the Wildcats on Sunday in only three games. Cusack led all players in digs in five of seven games last week and had six digs or more in four games - including a 10-dig effort in game three against Kentucky.
Cusack has finished in double figures in digs in all 24 matches she's played in her career and is averaging 5.65 digs per game - easily better than the previous SEC record of 5.12 set by UF's Rachel Engel in 2005.
The honor was the sixth weekly award of the season for Cusack. She was named the AVCA National Player of the Week on Nov. 6, the SEC Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 6, Oct. 16 and Nov. 16 and the SEC Freshman of the Week Oct. 2.
