November 13th, 2006
After becoming the first player to record at least 10 blocks in a match three times in one season in the last 10 years, University of Florida sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Bowers (Gainesville, Fla.) was honored as the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced Monday.
Bower helped guide the Gators to their 16th consecutive SEC title last weekend as UF recorded a pair of wins against Mississippi and Mississippi State. Against the Bulldogs, Bowers picked up two solo blocks and eight block assists to reach double figures for the third time this season. She also collected nine kills against Mississippi State on .600 hitting to finish with 15.0 points - the sixth time in the last seven matches Bowers has reached double digits.
For the week, Bowers averaged 2.50 blocks per game - nearly a full block more than her seasonal average of 1.51 per game. Her average of 1.51 blocks per game ranks sixth in Florida history.
