Kelsey Bowers - SEC Defensive Player of the Week

University of Florida sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Bowers broke a 13-year old Gator record during the weekend and was honored as the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts.

Against Alabama on Sunday, Bowers helped the Gators become the first SEC team to beat the Crimson Tide at home in 2006 by recording a Florida record 13 block assists. The previous Florida record of 11 was originally set by Kim Hale in 1993 and had been matched on five other occasions. Bowers' sum of 13 total blocks in the match was just two shy of the Florida record of 15 set by Jenni Patterson in 1987.

For the week, Bowers averaged a whopping 2.57 blocks per game, while also standing out offensively by matching her career high of 13 kills when the Gators defeated Auburn on Wednesday. For the season, Bowers is averaging 1.54 blocks per game - a figure that would rank sixth in school history. She's also hitting .440 for the year - a percentage that would place her third in school history and currently ranks sixth in the nation.

The honor is the second for Bowers this season as she earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 25.

The seventh-ranked Gators return to action this weekend by traveling to #11 LSU on Friday (8 p.m. ET) and Arkansas on Sunday (2:30 p.m. ET). Both contests can be heard live on WRUF-AM 850 and www.GatorZone.com, while the Arkansas match can also be seen on GatorVision Online.
