Gators close out home Spring Competitions with 2 wins

The University of Florida volleyball team continued its strong play during the spring season by winning all four matches it played against Minnesota and Virginia on Saturday at the Lemerand Center.
With its victories on the day, Florida improved to 10-0 during the spring season with two wins apiece against Georgia Tech, Miami, Barry University and both the Gophers and Cavaliers.
During the morning session, the Gators opened against Virginia, which finished 20-11 overall and 15-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season. Florida dropped its first game of the spring season, 28-30, before rebounding to take the next two by scores of 30-20 and 15-10.
Florida then battled 2004 NCAA finalist Minnesota and came out with a 3-0 win with game scores of 30-22, 30-25, 15-9. Junior outside hitter Marcie Hampton paced the Gators against the Gophers with 10 kills and a block, while junior middle blocker Kisya Killingsworth
added six kills, as did junior opposite hitter Amber McCray.
To open the afternoon session, the Gators disposed of Virginia 2-0 (30-26, 30-18). Killingsworth was on top of her game as she totaled 11 kills and a block against the Cavaliers. Hampton added eight kills and a block, while sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Bowers tallied five kills, two aces and a block.
To cap the afternoon, Florida knocked off Minnesota 2-1.
The Gators will close out the spring season next weekend at the Texas Tornados Tournament in Houston. On Saturday, April 15, Florida will face Texas at 8:30 a.m. before taking on TCU at 10 a.m. and closing out with the Longhorns again at 1 p.m.
