Two Gators honored for academic achievements

University of Florida sophomore outside hitter Marcie Hampton and sophomore opposite hitter Amber McCray were each named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Third Team as announced Thursday.
Hampton, a journalism major carrying a 3.46 gpa, is second on the team with 3.24 digs per game - a clip that ranks second among all sophomores in school history and seventh among all players. Hampton also is third on the team in kills per game (2.85), while she leads the Southeastern Conference with 11.4 attempts for every hitting error. Hampton is second on the squad with seven double-doubles in 2005 and has finished in double-digits in points in 20 of Florida's 25 matches this season.
McCray, also a journalism major with a 3.75 gpa, is fourth on the team with 2.41 kills per game and she ranks sixth in the SEC in conference matches with a hitting efficiency of .332. McCray ha reset her career best in kills four times in 2005 with the figure currently standing at 15. She has hit above .300 in 11 matches this season and had a stretch where she hit above .500 in four of five matches. McCray was also a 2004 SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and a 2004 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
With the additions, Florida now had a total of nine Academic All-Americans who have earned 15 honors in school history with all but one honor coming in head coach Mary Wise's tenure. Florida has also had at least one honoree in each of the last four seasons.
